Tooro Kingdom Succession Committee Endorses George Desmond Kamurasi

FORT PORTAL — The Royal Succession Committee of Tooro Kingdom has endorsed George Desmond Kamurasi as the proposed successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, journalist Andrew Mwenda has disclosed.

Mwenda, a close associate of the royal family, revealed that the 21‑member committee convened at Fort Motel in Fort Portal City on Friday, September 4, where 15 of the 18 members present voted in favor of Kamurasi, 36.

“We now await the Omusuuga to make a formal announcement to the Babiito clan leaders,” Mwenda said, noting that Tooro custom requires the succession to be declared publicly only after King Oyo’s burial.

Committee Deliberations
The succession committee was constituted by the Babiito royal clan on August 28, following King Oyo’s death in Texas on August 26, 2026. Mwenda said the group has met daily since August 31 to deliberate on the matter.

Mwenda explained that he revealed the committee’s decision early to prevent speculation and confusion on social media.

Royal Lineage
Kamurasi is the son of George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, a younger brother of King Patrick David Mathew Kaboyo Olimi III, making him a first cousin to the late King Oyo. Mwenda added that Mugenyi had been named second in the line of succession in the will of their father, King George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III.

Political and Military Endorsements
Mwenda said he briefed Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces, and Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Commander Land Force, both of whom endorsed the committee’s choice. He further claimed that President Yoweri Museveni supported the decision and dispatched a senior Cabinet minister to consult stakeholders in Fort Portal.

“After extensive consultations, the committee was convinced there is broad consensus around Kamurasi’s succession,” Mwenda stated.

Awaiting Formal Announcement
As of publication, neither State House nor the Tooro Kingdom had issued an official statement confirming Kamurasi’s selection. Under Tooro tradition, succession is managed by the Babiito royal clan and its designated structures.

The kingdom is expected to focus first on King Oyo’s funeral and burial ceremonies before formally presenting his successor.
