George Desmond Kamurasi Emerges as Tooro’s Proposed Successor
FORT PORTAL, Uganda — George Desmond Kamurasi’s name was not widely anticipated in Tooro’s royal succession process. Yet on September 4, 2026, the 21‑member Royal Succession Committee convened in Fort Portal and endorsed him as the proposed heir to his late cousin, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Of the 18 members present, 15 voted in Kamurasi’s favor. His formal proclamation is expected after King Oyo’s burial, in line with Tooro custom.
Royal Lineage and Background
Born in Uganda on August 28, 1990, Kamurasi spent much of his adult life in England, where he studied, worked, and built his family. He is the son of George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, a younger brother of former King Olimi Kaboyo, making him King Oyo’s first cousin.
Kamurasi is also a grandson of King George Kamurasi Rukidi III, placing him firmly within a royal line historically recognized in Tooro’s succession framework.
Succession History
The significance of Kamurasi’s selection is tied to his father’s role in succession. Historical accounts note that Mugenyi was named second in line to succeed his elder brother Olimi Kaboyo in the will of their father, King Rukidi III. Though Mugenyi never ascended the throne, his position in succession history now strengthens the case for his son’s endorsement.
Mugenyi himself played a pivotal role in Tooro’s monarchy. After Olimi Kaboyo’s death in 1995, his three‑year‑old son Oyo inherited the throne. Mugenyi was appointed guardian to the child king, guiding him during his early years on the throne.
A Life Beyond the Palace
Unlike many royal figures, Kamurasi lived largely outside the spotlight. His years in Britain kept him away from palace politics, and he did not openly position himself as a future monarch. His emergence therefore surprised many outside the royal establishment, though his lineage firmly anchors him within Tooro’s royal tradition.
Family Life
Kamurasi is married to Abbey Rooke, known as Abbey Kamurasi, and the couple has one child. His father, Mugenyi, married Priscillar Mugenyi in 1994; she passed away in 2004, leaving four children. Mugenyi himself died in 2016.
From Heir Presumptive to Omukama
Kamurasi’s selection brings together multiple strands of Tooro’s royal history: grandson of a former king, son of a man once named in succession documents, guardian lineage to King Oyo, and cousin to the monarch whose death has triggered the current process.
