AI data-centre boom emerges as new inflation challenge for Australia

Australia’s rapid data-centre expansion is becoming an increasingly important economic issue as billions of dollars of artificial intelligence infrastructure investment adds pressure to power networks, construction costs and labour demand.
Data-centre investment has increased sharply over the past year as global technology companies race to secure computing capacity for AI.
Australian operators have reportedly raised around A$35 billion this year, while dozens of additional projects are in the development pipeline.
The Reserve Bank has now drawn attention to the inflationary impact of the investment boom.
Large projects require electricity infrastructure, skilled workers, construction materials and land at a time when parts of the economy are already operating close to capacity.
Supporters argue the short-term investment surge will ultimately produce productivity gains as businesses deploy AI more widely.
However, the timing of those benefits remains uncertain.
The debate means data centres are no longer simply a technology story.
They are increasingly becoming part of Australia’s broader discussion about inflation, electricity supply, planning and whether the economy has enough capacity to absorb another major investment cycle.
