OpenAI’s Sam Altman states it would be ‘inexpedient’ to go public in 2026

While OpenAI has filed confidentially for an IPO, the business will not be going public this year, according to CEO Sam Altman.

Altman was interviewed recently by Fortune editorial director Alyson Shontell; in the middle of the fallout from the OpenAI-HuggingFace hack, in addition to broader discussions about AI safety, Shontell asked whether OpenAI still feels pressure to “move truly quick” due to its IPO strategies.

“We’re not hurrying into an IPO,” Altman stated. “I in fact believe that offered whatever occurring with security, today would be an inexpedient minute to go public.”

Instead, he firmly insisted that OpenAI will go public “when we’re all set, which is when business is all set, when we feel all set from what the minute resembles in society with this innovation.” When continued whether that implies the IPO isn’t taking place in 2026, Altman responded, “I would state not 2026, yeah. We have actually got a great deal of things to do.”

The New York Times reported in June that although OpenAI had actually worked with lenders and legal representatives with the objective of going public in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2026, the business was favoring 2027 due to the volatility of tech stocks and its own monetary difficulties.
