I Tried the New Customisable CurrentBody Series 3 LED Mask

During my decade of experience as a beauty editor, I’ve tested a lot of skin tools, but specifically several LED masks. And the biggest decision when shopping for one (aside from figuring out which ones actually work) is deciding what type of LED light you want from your mask. Many LED masks on the market offer just one wavelength (i.e. just red, or just blue light) as part of the treatment. But if you find a mask that does offer multiple light treatments, and you want to treat different concerns at the same time, then you have to do separate consecutive treatments, which isn’t the easiest way to streamline your skincare routine.
This is why I was particularly excited to try the new CurrentBody LED Red Light Therapy Face Mask: Series 3 (£500). Not only does it boast six different types of wavelengths (including red, near-infrared, deep near-infrared, blue, green and yellow), but it also allows you to fully customise the exact areas you want each light on your skin. I haven’t been this excited for an LED mask launch in years, so I got my hands on one to test it out myself.

The Customisable Treatment

On to the fun bit—this is easily my favourite part of the LED mask, which makes it the most innovative launch I’ve seen in years. Using the Currentbody app, you can build a customised treatment by drawing on the exact placements you want for each individual bulb on your mask. Want to treat breakouts on your chin? Draw on blue light there. Want to encourage collagen production around your eyes? Scribble on some red, near-infrared and deep near-infrared. Redness around your nose? Add some green light. You can even layer up different lights in the same areas if you have an area with multiple concerns that you want to treat simultaneously. You can save the treatment to your remote (so you won’t need your phone each time), and it will also create a treatment code that you can share with others to also enjoy the treatment on their device.
It sounds counterintuitive, but too much light can actually be a hindrance to your skin. So CurrentBody has enlisted MyDose technology, which automatically adjusts the power of each wavelength for optimum absorption, depending on the number of LED colours you’re choosing, so you will always get the correct dose for each treatment.
The Technology
Below are the exact wavelengths used in the Series 3, which you’ll find across the preset treatments and the customisable mode.
Red (633nm): Helps to boost collagen production to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Near‐Infrared (830nm): Firms the skin.
Deep Near‐Infrared (1072nm): Encourages collagen production at the deeper levels of the skin.
Blue (415nm): Helps to calm and clear acne.
Green (532nm): Brightens and reduces pigmentation.
Yellow (590nm): Calms redness and irritation.
CurrentBody also features MyDose and Veritace technology. The former ensures that whichever light combinations you’re using, it will automatically adjust the power for optimum skin absorption. The latter ensures the quality of the LED bulbs during the production process. An LED mask is only as good as the quality of its bulbs, and this process ensures that every single one is tested to ensure it emits the exact light that is proven to deliver results.
How to Use It
(Image credit: @eleanorvousden for Who What Wear UK)
CurrentBody recommends using the mask 3-5 times per week (any more than this won’t add any further benefits), and using the mask on clean, dry skin—it’s best to leave your serums and moisturisers until after your LED treatment. Each treatment takes 10 minutes, and the mask fits on securely thanks to the moulded, flexible design and straps that fit securely around the head.
You can choose from the four preset treatments, or use the CurrentBody app to customise your own treatment. You simply choose the type of light you want for specific areas and draw on. You can tailor it bulb by bulb, so you can get very specific about the areas you want to treat. You can then save the treatment to your controller and start the 10-minute treatment from there, and the mask will automatically switch off once it is complete.
My Experience
(Image credit: @eleanorvousden for Who What Wear UK)
I’ve only had the Series 3 for a couple of weeks, so it’s early days in terms of my results (you’ll want to wait 8-12 weeks to see the full benefits with any LED mask), but I’m already so impressed. I’d forgive you for thinking that the customised treatment could be gimmicky, but it’s actually genius.
Being able to choose the exact wavelengths you want, in the exact areas they’re required, is a game-changer for treating multiple skincare concerns in one go. I have sensitive and combination skin, which is prone to both acne and rosacea, and it has totally streamlined my routine. Rather than having to do multiple 10-minute treatments with different lights, I can do it all in one go. It has already saved me a lot of time, and I enjoy using it. I also love the option of having different light treatments to choose from as my skin’s needs change, as well as the preset treatments if I want a one-and-done treatment all over.
The moulded, contoured mask is flexible, so it’s comfortable to wear and sits close to the skin (another important feature to look for in an LED mask, to ensure the light reaches your skin). The straps fit securely enough that I could walk around with it on in theory, so you’re not tethered to lying down for fear of it falling off. I mostly used mine as part of my evening routine to wind down.
Although it’s still early days in terms of seeing full results, I have noticed some initial benefits from testing. The mask landed with me at the optimum time; my skin was stressed, inflamed and spotty after a busy few weeks, a poor diet and a bathroom reno that meant I was cleansing my face in my kitchen sink for a month. I’ve contended with lots of breakouts, a rosacea flare and hyperpigmentation from acne scarring. On the nights I used a customised treatment, I definitely noticed my skin looking calmer and more glowy come morning, and the lifespan of my breakouts noticeably decreased. I’m excited to see the full results develop over the coming months.
Is the Series 3 Worth It?
In short, I think this mask is worth the investment. Investment is the key word here, as it is £500. If you’ve already purchased an LED mask, then it’s quite a lot to fork out if you’ve already spent a few hundred pounds on your current model. But if you’re yet to purchase one, or you’ve been wanting to upgrade your current model that only has one or two treatments, then I’d absolutely recommend going for this.
The option to customise your treatment sets it apart from anything else out there, and with CurrentBody’s technology, I can confidently recommend it to anyone who is looking to invest in a good LED mask. With so many devices available, this makes for a good investment, especially if you’re wanting to target multiple skin concerns in one. It would be remiss of me not to mention that an LED mask can’t replace a good skincare routine (that means being consistent and wearing your SPF), and you have to be consistent with your treatments in order to see results. Whilst some beauty tools have gathered dust in my bedside table, this is one I actively look forward to using, and so it’s been easy enough to reach for most nights of the week.
How Does the Series 3 Compare to Series 2 and Series 1?
The original Series 1 featured 132 LED bulbs and two wavelengths (red and near-infrared), whilst Series 2 increased the bulb count to 236, introduced a third wavelength (deep near-infrared) and featured a more contoured silicone design with updated straps for a more secure fit.
The new Series 3 retains the same shape and design as its predecessor, but increases the number of LED bulbs to 750 and adds three further wavelengths: blue, green and yellow. The controller has also been updated with a touchscreen display, allowing you to navigate the treatment menu and follow your session using a countdown timer.

How We Tested
I tested the CurrentBody LED Red Light Therapy Face Mask: Series 3 first hand over the past weeks to see how well it performed. I used both the pre-set treatments, as well as the customisable treatments that you can design on the app to send to your LED mask. I used the mask 3-5 times per week, which is recommended by the brand, and noted the differences in my skin.
