2026 Retrocomputing Problem: Dollhouse Arcade Cabinet Runs Distant DOS Video games

Classic DOS video games by no means ran from inside stand-up arcade cupboards in dollhouses, however [Juha Lilja] imagines a planet by which they did. His Micro DOS arcade cabinet is described as a tool that “runs nothing” as a result of the tiny unit is definitely streaming the video games over Wi-Fi from a close-by PC. That doesn’t imply it’s only a glorified film participant, although — the cupboard is playable, if a bit awkward to take action.

The core of the micro arcade cupboard is a M5Stack AtomS3R operating as an embedded distant terminal. One tilts the entire cupboard as if it had been a digital joystick to ship up, down, left, and proper. Button presses are finished by pushing on the bodily display screen; it helps single, double, and long-clicks. While in idea one might set up a micro joystick and buttons as an alternative, [Juha] aimed to maintain every little thing self-contained and use solely what was already constructed into the AtomS3R. In this case, that’s a movement sensor and the only button which is activated by urgent the display screen.

The video games themselves run on a PC, with display screen contents being streamed wirelessly to the little show and inputs being despatched again. The firmware on the AtomS3R doesn’t know or care what recreation is being performed; all it does is show what it’s informed, and ship again enter occasions. The again finish does the remainder. This makes it fairly versatile, and a tiny arcade cupboard is a helpful option to reveal the entire system. It’s a fairly slick addition to his daughter’s dollhouse, too.

If streaming DOS video games (or no matter else) to economical endpoints is providing you with some concepts, the GitHub repository holds code and a fuller rationalization of the way it works. There’s a deeper discussion on a number of the finer technical factors, as effectively. Watch it in motion within the video embedded just under the web page break.
