Cloudflare acquires Deno to enhance its Workers programming mannequin


Cloudflare announced Friday that it’s buying Deno, the startup behind the programming runtime of the identical title.

According to Cloudflare’s Kenton Varda, Cloudflare will use this acquisition to enhance its Workers programming mannequin and platform, which permits prospects to construct and run software program on Cloudflare’s community. (Varda is principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers.)

Deno — which was co-founded by Bert Belder and Node.js creator Ryan Dahl — lately launched celld, an open supply implementation of Workers, which Varda wrote “delighted” the Cloudflare crew. Varda argued that opposite to “a preferred idea” that the corporate “made Cloudflare Workers work otherwise from different cloud platforms with the intention to create ‘lock-in,’” the corporate believes “being open supply and giving folks an escape hatch is good enterprise.”

Dahl, in the meantime, wrote that his crew is “becoming a member of Cloudflare to make the Workers programming mannequin a mainstream approach to construct servers.”

The monetary phrases of the acquisition weren’t disclosed. Deno had raised a total of $26 million, together with a Series A led by Sequoia.
